Standing seam is the premium end of residential roofing. Instead of overlapping shingles held down by hundreds of exposed nails, it uses long vertical metal panels whose seams lock together and hide the fasteners underneath. Done right, it's a 40-to-70-year roof.

Metal, finish, and color

Panels are rolled in 26, 24, or 22-gauge steel (heavier gauge = more dent resistance), or aluminum and copper for coastal and architectural jobs. The finish is what determines how long the color lasts:

Kynar 500® (PVDF)The premium finish. A 70%-resin fluoropolymer coating that resists fading and chalking for decades — Taylor's paint-film warranty runs 40 years, with 30-year color-fade and chalk coverage.
ArmorTech™ (SMP)A silicone-modified polyester for value lines. Costs less, but fades and chalks sooner than Kynar — a real difference on reds and dark colors.
Colors28 standard "Cool" Kynar colors using IR-reflective pigments that meet ENERGY STAR® steep-slope criteria — they reflect heat and can lower attic temps in summer.

  • 40–70 year lifespan — 2–3× a typical asphalt roof.
  • Class A fire and non-combustible — good for wildfire-season exposure.
  • Concealed fasteners + floating clips let the metal expand and contract without loosening.
  • Sheds rain, snow, and moss — a smooth metal surface doesn't hold the moss that grows on porous asphalt out here.

Honest trade-offs

  • Costs more up front — roughly 2–3× asphalt. The math works if you'll stay long enough to bank the extra lifespan.
  • "Oil-canning" — slight waviness visible on broad flat panels. It's cosmetic, not a defect; striations and backer rod reduce it.
  • Installer skill is everything — clip spacing and thermal-movement detailing make or break a metal roof. This is not a job for a crew learning on your house.
  • On steep (10:12+) slopes above walkways we add snow retention so shed snow doesn't slide dangerously.
